Ryan Rodney Reynolds was born on 23 October 1976 in Vancouver, Canada. He is the youngest of four siblings in his family. His father, James Chester, was a wholesaler while his mother was a retailer. His two older brothers worked as policemen in British Columbia.
He has an Irish ancestry and was raised a Roman Catholic.
